Founded in 1987, the James Madison Institute is a state level conservative think tank dedicated to "limited government, economic freedom, federalism, traditional values, and individual liberty coupled with individual responsibility" and supports "practical free-market ideas on public policy issues"(JMI website 5/04).
JMI is interested in energy and the environment, government and politics, healthcare, property rights, taxation and budget, law and judiciary, political thought and traditional values as issue areas. JMI is particularly active in the area of education, and was a sponsoring organization of Floridians for Educational Choice, an organization promoting school vouchers. JMI is a member of the State Policy Network
