The American Conservative Union Foundation, along with the American Conservative Union, is an organization dedicated to promoting conservative views on public policy issues and educating the next generation of conservative leaders. ACUF runs an on-line "Conservative University" as well as producing statements on pertinent issues, while the ACU, which bills itself as the oldest conservative advocacy group, focuses more on direct lobbying.
The ACU claims their most significant efforts have been "fighting to keep OSHA off the backs of small businesses; opposing the Panama Canal giveaway; challenging the SALT treaties; supporting aid to freedom fighters in communist countries; promoting the confirmation of conservative justices to the Supreme Court; advocating near-term deployment of strategic defenses; and battling against higher taxes and wasteful government spending." Additionally, they are now taking on rising gas prices by setting their sites on environmentalist groups and a "nervous Executive" afraid to allow big oil companies to expand their drilling operations in areas such as the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the Outer Continental Shelf in the Atlantic Ocean. The ACUF also disparages the idea of smaller cars, higher fuel-efficiency, and a switch to renewables. David Keene, the chairman of the ACU and ACUF, has been involved in conservative politics on the Hill for most of his career, and is also a lobbyist with the Carmen Group.
