During his time at the University of Auckland, de Freitas has served as Deputy Dean of Science, Head of Science and Technology and four years as Pro Vice Chancellor. He has been Vice President of the Meteorological Society of New Zealand and is a founding member of the Australia New Zealand Climate Forum. Formerly an editor of the international journal Climate Research. From 1999-2001, he served on the Executive Board of the International Society of Biometeorology.
