Chairman Emeritus

Dr. Schmitt is a former astronaut. In 1976 he was elected to the US Senate from New Mexico and served on the following Committees: Chairman of the Subcommittee on Science, Technology and Space of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Rural Housing and Development of the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs and Financial Institutions, and Chairman of the Subcommittee on Legislation and Rights of Americans of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.

"Dr. Schmitt received his B.S. (1957) from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), a Fulbright Fellowship at the University of Oslo (1957-1958), a Kennecott Fellowship in geology at Harvard University (1958-1959), and his Ph.D. (1964) in geology from Harvard."
