Gottlieb, gun activist and one of the founders of the "wise use" movement, has done jail time for tax fraud.

Gottlieb founded CDFE on July 4, 1976., and runs both the non-profit Free Enterprise Press and for-profit Merrill Press. Gottlieb edited the 1989 "The WIse Use Agenda," published in as the platform for the infant anti-environmental movement. Gottlieb also co-authored "Trashing the Economy: How Runaway Environmentalism is Wrecking America" and has written several pro-gun books. The American Freedom Coalition, a political arm of the Unification Church, once shared office space with CDFE at Liberty Park, a building owned outright by Gottlieb.
